신이피는 유럽연합고등영상원(École européenne supérieure de l’image) 에서 미디어아트 전공 석사학위를 받았으며 주로 영상을 기반으로한 퍼포먼스, 설치작업을 한다. 그녀의 작업은 집단과 사회 속에서의 한 인간의 관계성을 미시적으로 시각화하는 과정들로서의 ‘실험실’을 표방하는 것으로부터 시작한다. 현재 서울에서 거주, 작업하고 있다.

Ifie Sin works mainly with video as well as performance and installation, received MFA at École européenne supérieure de l’image. She sees relationships from a micro-perspective, so does a scientist in a laboratory, and her idea starts from there. She is currently working and based in Seoul, South Korea.

근래에 자연사박물관에서 시작된 관심은 동물의 종과 환경요인으로 확장되었고 박제된 새들의 학문적 가치에 대한 의문과 죽음을 다루는 생명권에 대한 것으로 이어지게 되었다. 진화생물학에서 철학적 명제를 과학적 명제로 치환할때 인문학과 학제적인 관점이 교차하는 부분에 관심을 갖게 되었다. 자연적인 생명의 탄생과 죽음은 무한히 반복되며 중간형태로서 진화를 말할 수도 있을것이다. 다윈이 표현한 진화는 발전(Evolution)만이 아닌 변이를 수반한 유전 (Descent with modification)이라는 표현에서 나는 사회적 개념으로서 개별성을 존중하고자 하며 과학에서의 윤리적 기준에 대한 연구를 계속하려고 계획한다. 인류가 가졌었던 인종으로 단축되었었던 타자화 문제는 더욱 복잡해 졌다. 또한 구제역으로 엄청난 개체수의 가축 도축이 이루어졌고 병원체는 공포의 대상이 되었다고도 할 수 있다. 이런 희생을 발판으로 전염을 막고 인간은 안전할수있는것인지, 생명권과 인권에 대한 판단은 어떤 이해관계로 이루어지며 흔들리는 윤리적 판단과 생명의 가치관에 대한 고민들을 계속하게 되었다. 나의 작업은 종의 진화, 생명의 역사에 관한 단편적인 서사를 담고 있으며 사회 구성원으로서의 개인을 다수이자 하나의 ‘개인’인 화자로 표현하는 내러티브를 가진 작업들로 구성된다.

A note of intent. 2022

In recent years, the interest that began in natural history museums has extended to animal species and environmental factors, prompting questions about the academic value of stuffed birds and the right to life. I became interested in the intersection of humanities and academic perspectives, which appears in evolutionary biology when replacing philosophical propositions with scientific propositions. The natural life cycle of birth and death is repeated infinitely, and it may suggest evolution in an intermediate form. Inspired by how Darwin defined evolution as “Decent with Modification,” I would like to respect individuality as a social concept and continue to research the moral standards in science.

Objectification, which was only toward the human races, is now more complicated than ever. Foot-and-mouth disease has resulted in the slaughter of large numbers of livestock, and the pathogen has become a target of fear.

The questions of whether humans can be safe from the contagion, making stepping stones of sacrifices, and how to judge life and human rights are continuously asked in my research regarding ethical judgment and the value of life.

My work contains a fragmentary narrative on the evolution of species and the history of life, and elevate the individual members of society as one majority “individual” through a narrative video installation.
